Depends what it is for. An extension suits anything that has to connect to the rest of the house, like a kitchen or a bathroom. A garden room suits anything better for being separate: a home office, a gym, guests, noise, or clients arriving. It usually costs less per square metre, and you carry on living normally while it goes up rather than living around dust for three months.
